One important thing in aviation headsets is the noise cancellation ability, since there is high noise of the wind, propeller, and exhaust. General headsets have a certain degree of passive noise canceling. This is derived from the design and materials used in the ear of the headset. Some headsets have a greater degree of passive noise-canceling capabilities than others. Many headsets more passive noise canceling abilities have larger ears and add even more padding in the ear seals. Most advanced aviation headsets have active noise cancellation abilities of 20-30 db. This works on the principle of electronic noise cancellation, which is possible by generating a signal identical to the sound pressure level, but inverted, so they cancel each other out. These headsets offer more noise reduction for hearing and require batteries or an alternative power source to power the electronic noise canceling function.
